Grade II* listed Carbook Hall has been sold by Punch Taverns to West Street Leisure, the company which also owns Bar & Beyond on West Street in the city centre and The Clubhouse on London Road.
The original building was 12th century or earlier, replaced by a timber framed ‘tudor style’ building, which survived until the 19th century.
What remains of the building now is a stone wing, added in 1623.
There is some wonderful oak panelling to be seen (see CAMRA article linked to below) as well as this plasterwork ceiling.
Being Grade II* listed should mean that any changes affecting the character of the building would need to be approved. However the primary concern now is not whether any forthcoming planning application will be approved.
Sean Fogg, the new owner, has stated (see JUS News article below) that he wants to preserve the historical value of the building. However with the owner having no clear plans for future use or a prospective tenant in mind, the building looks likely to face a period where it lays empty. For as long as that is the case, the biggest threat for this historical gem is damage through vandalism or arson.
